The cameras stuttered. A few jaws dropped audibly.

Sometimes Spencer wondered if Alex and Henry were aware of how *obvious* they were. Henry stayed tight-lipped about it and Alex changed the subject whenever he or Liam tried to gently broach the topic. So Spencer would leave them to it, hopeful that they would come to him when they were ready. When they felt safe to.
Still, it was like they’d walked out of a cheesy, early 2000’s rom-com. Henry with his button-up shirts, and pressed chinos, carefully driving to school every morning in a practical, very safe Volvo. And Alex, with his skinny jeans, leather jackets, nose ring, and Triumph motorcycle he’d rebuilt himself that roared into their school’s parking lot every morning. They were the epitome of “opposites attract” and Spencer was kind of obsessed with how adorable it was.

Henry & Alex have been "secretly" dating for a year, except literally everyone knows they're together. 5 times they think they're being subtle, and 1 time they're out and loud.

He wasn’t allowed to move away from girls with Claremont-Holleran pins on their shirts who put their hands in the back pocket of his jeans on election night, or actresses who grabbed his chin and pulled him in for a kiss on New Year’s, or journalists with a soft spot for his father’s policies coaxing him into a hot tub on the campaign trail when he was barely old enough to vote himself.
After all, Alex belonged to America. All of him.
Sometimes, he wasn’t sure if Henry had figured that out yet.

Paul, standing in front of him, hand in hand with Leena. That same pitiful look in his eyes as he takes Henry in and shoos his girlfriend away as if he’s being nice. Him apologizing for coming around when everything is “so fresh, I know, I’m sorry,” and touching his arm, ensuring him that “you’ll find someone eventually, I promise.”
It’s that word that grates him. Eventually. The loaded meaning behind it. The implication that Henry might find someone that loves him but it will take time.
Maybe that’s why he blurts it out, without thinking. The words that’ll surely come back to bite him. The words he cannot for the life of him take back, ever.
“Actually, I already have someone.”
Alex and Henry hate each other, but in a moment of panic, Henry tells his ex he's been dating Alex to get him off his back. It works a little too well.

Fuck, Alex used to be better at this.
Something about Henry, who got dropped into Alex’s life by June a little more than a year ago, has him completely off of his game. Alex has been flustered by him since the moment they met, unable to form complete sentences in front of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen.
So maybe Alex didn’t use the word date when he asked, not explicitly.
