    Summary

Mandalore tilts his head to study Fett. Even relaxed, his stance is set for battle, grip nearly perfect; he was born for a fight, that much is obvious. Clan Fett was nothing before Cathar, its best son little more than a footnote until he knelt at Mandalore’s feet, golden beskar stained with ash, and held out his spear as an offering and an oath. My life is yours, he had said—gods, he’d been so young there kneeling in the rain of a dying planet, and yet he’d been the only commander to make it through the battle, the only one with the strength to give the orders that needed giving.

    My life is yours.

“I accept your terms,” Mandalore says, locking eyes with Fett through the blackened visor of his mask, and the fight begins.

    Summary

“I’m not going to survive tomorrow,” Cassus says, quietly, conversational, the rough edges of Mando’a turning smooth and silvery and fluid in his mouth. His back is to the lit holotable, the only source of light in the room other than flickering indicators on banks of computers, and he leans against it a little further with a tired sigh, cracks his neck and rubs one hand over his forehead, pushing his hair out of his eyes with an absent motion. It’s been a long day, between checking the minefields and fueling every fighter and basilisk and cruiser they have and distributing every piece of beskar still in storage - long enough he feels justified in reaching his hand down to the shelf under the table’s edge and wrapping gloved fingers around a pair of bottles. He sets them down on the table’s surface next to him with a quiet thunk, pops the tops in a pair of quick, practiced motions, and lifts one to offer the figure in the corner of his eye, still standing facing the projections spinning lazily through the air above the holotable’s surface. “Drink?”

    Summary

This is how it begins (though in truth, it began long before).

The Jedi are getting desperate, Revan finds herself thinking as she stares at the half-trained padawan with the golden lightsaber, standing defiantly (but foolishly) among the corpses of her fallen Jedi. Oh, the girl is powerful, burning bright as Tatooine’s suns in the Force, but she’s young, grips the hilt of her lightsaber too tight as she lifts it into a defensive guard. (An admirable effort, but flawed; Revan is clearly her superior, and a defensive strategy is the wrong way to go - but of course the Jedi train defense into their padawans as the best tactic to take in any fight.)

This is how it begins: a betrayal, and a bond.

    [or: Revan remembers.]
