And you’re you, which never made you feel as bad as it does now that you’re surrounded by good people all day long. He’s the worst of them all, though. So fucking sweet, so considerate. He knows you hate the apologies, and he stops. He knows you hate the upstairs neighbors, and he says something to them to make them quiet down. He knows you hate talking about Langdon, and he gives you an out every time the man comes up.
Trinity probably should have known that Huckleberry was going to be trouble when she persuaded him to come live with her. She couldn't have known that he would become so important to her. (Seriously, this is the guy who killed a patient on his first day! What was she thinking?)

“Maybe I should have, huh?” Frenchie hisses. His head hurts, blood roaring viciously in his ears. It feels like the thing rattling around inside his skull hasn’t been his for a long time. Suddenly he’s untethered in space, hands stilling in his lap.
His voice softens, eyes losing focus. It feels like forever until he’s able to speak again.
“But even that would be too big a mercy, wouldn’t it mon coeur?”

He’s losing time. Day and night pass again and again and again, and he sits in his chair and stares at a screen and wonders what the hell is going on. He’s too far underwater to hear anything. Conversation becomes far-off, inhuman. He becomes inhuman. His skin is plastic. It has no nerve endings. He pulls and stretches and pokes and prods and feels nothing. He watches his skin dimpling in. Watches it spring back to its position. Elastic plastic. He watches until he can’t watch anymore, until his fingers become blurs and his arms become blobs and the world goes from objects to shapes and colors to abstractions.
Hughie doesn’t think he fully escaped the whale. Not in any way that matters, at least.
