I love fairytales and I love Tudor history, so reading this mashup between the two was a joy. Picking Katherine Parr as the POV character was inspired – she usually doesn’t get as much attention as her more famous predecessors, but she was a really interesting figure and she shines in this fic. I also love little Elizabeth’s role. And it’s neat to read about all of Henry’s wives getting to know each other over the years.

Okay, I love Sam Cassidy, fair warning. (I also love Malcolm Tucker, a whole fuckin’ lot, but for now we’ll confine ourselves to Sam.) This fic is unabashedly Sam-centric, and I love how excellent a partner she makes for Malcolm. She may gently push and pull a few levers, just little nudges with an innocent face, instead of swearing and threatening and browbeating people into compliance, but she’s excellent at what she does and it’s really satisfying to see Malcolm properly value her work. (Which is totally in-character for him.)

Outsider POV is one of my favorite techniques, and this story uses it very well. It’s great to see Gen’s adjustment to being King from the point of view of one of his attendants, and to see how the attendants have to adjust in turn. Attolia and Gen’s public discussions/arguments are particularly fun, and the process of Gen Steals Hilarion’s Allegiance is fantastic.

So, I’ve wanted a really good Jedediah/Octavius first-time fic for FOREVER. (Doesn’t everyone who watches those movies?) And guess what? This is exactly that fic! It’s hilariously funny, with a spot-on Jed voice and lots of great one-liners, and it’s also absolutely adorable and gives the two of them their happy ending in a believable, wonderful way. Two cowboy thumbs up.

I feel like Nero Wolfe is a particularly hard canon to pastiche, but this fic does a dang good job. It’s at once an excellent case fic, with plenty of Archie and Wolfe to enjoy, and a lovely pre-slash ‘realization’ piece. (And as always, Wolfe appears to be one step ahead…) I really enjoyed this one.

I like the style and structure of this fic very much. Matilda’s heroines inspire the sections and give them themes, gently tracing her growing-up years and the happiness she finds with Miss Honey. (I also love the “Miss Honey and the vicar” subplot.) The dialogue is excellent, and the prose quite pretty.

There are a lot of Emperor’s New Groove fics in the collections this year (and if you like the canon, check them all out!), but this one was my favorite because of the great Kronk voice. The Blue Sword has been one of my favorite books since I was a teenager, and I always hope to see Yuletide fic for it. This is a beautiful found-family story set during the epilogue (between Harry & Corlath’s marriage and the birth of their first son). I loved the structure, the themes, and the lyricism of the prose.

Beautiful fic that shows us how Elinor became the person she was. Also starring young!Fergus, who is adorably fierce when Elinor is insulted and fascinated by her hair (but is too shy to look straight at her at first), and Maudie. I thoroughly loved reading about Elinor and her maturation, and the worldbuilding is first-rate.
