Suddenly, it felt less important to know how many miles there were to Freeport than to watch this— the way Garraty turned his face towards McVries’ neck, for just a moment, to breathe. Like when his Ma said to keep eyes on the pulpit during service. Not for his own personal good, no. But just so that someone saw it; so it was affirmed in that sense, whatever it was Garraty and McVries had.
