Leon was out of ammo. The realization came slowly to him, as he fumbled in his many belt pockets for some forgotten bullets, even though he knew he always kept track of how many rounds he had left. Pushing the Matilda back into its holster on his thigh, Leon unsheathed the knife in a broad swing, gripping it's handle tightly and assessed his situation. In any other circumstances, an empty magazine wouldn't have unnerved him, but as it was, he currently found himself pressed against the wall of an abandoned umbrella laboratory somewhere in the alpine mountains, the door opposite of him was sealed tightly, due to the sparse remnants of the emergency protocol still intact. Beyond it though, a mass of bodies was throwing itself against the glass, their mangled hands grabbing towards him.
or Leon has to handle more than he is capable of and has to grapple with his own loneliness.

He did his best to smile, tried to speak in the way that he had when they’d been young and Rex had sought him out in need of gentle reassurance. “It doesn’t,” The words fell flat, devoid of comfort, “It hurts each time you lose someone.”
What he didn’t say was that, when he caught himself thinking for just a moment too long, he wondered if this was better, if pain was better than apathy. A part of him feared that someday he’d simply cease to care, that there’d be too many dead for his grief to hold meaning. He worried, in the privacy of his room when he woke gasping from a nightmare, that he would cease to be Kote if he no longer cared.
Cody dreams over and over of drowning, of unknown waters encasing him. He never quite drowns, and eventually Cody starts to become a man that might survive the war. He realises that once, he might simply have been a child.
