“They did not ask me,” Lan Zhan says. “If they had, I would have told them that I work better alone. However”—he holds up a hand to forestall what appears to be another torrent of words from Wei Ying—“I have been informed that a co-commentator is a requirement for the Olympic commentary job, and so I will make this situation work.”
Lan Zhan, popular figure skating commentator, reluctantly gains a co-commentator.

Summary
Wei Wuxian found himself now. Staring across a contract circle made of candles, small animal bones (note that none of these bones were rabbit), twigs, grass clippings and walnuts at the very Lan he had to make a contract with in order for the Jiang coven to receive the medicinal book that held Jiang Yanli’s cure.
What he wanted to know was why this Lan in particular.
He was young, probably as young as Jiang Yanli. His cold golden eyes held no malice. They actually held no interest at all, giving nothing away but a bored, glazed over look. Gazing through the candlelit floor at the fox with a mild affliction, like he was also being forced into this transaction. In fact, Wei Wuxian wasn’t sure if the witch was even looking at him or over his head.

Or: Fox familiar Wei Wuxian makes a contract with a young Lan witch in order to get the cure for his best friend. Neither party are particularly interested. But with their power combined, they could solve the mysterious murders going on within the covens the Lan witches have been investigating.

Summary
Wei Ying had been powerful, smart, and bright. Too powerful, too smart, and too bright, in fact. By the end of his stay in the Cloud Recess, he had started to talk of dark magic. Upon arriving back home after Lan Qiren expelled him, he started to practice it. Shadow work, first, which was unorthodox enough, and then necromancy, forbidden spells. His advancements, findings and approaches had been welcome when the threat of the Wen Coven was at its greatest, but then Coven Leader Wen Ruohan’s magic had turned against himself and another branch of the family had taken over, and Wei Ying's ideas had turned from innovative and interesting to dangerous and threatening.
It had resulted in the breaking of his wand, in his banishment from the Chinese Magical World. And thirteen years after it, he remained away and unreachable, branded as an heretic—Wei Wuxian was the looming shadow of a sibling, and a friend, and a lover, but no more.
Now, however. Now...
