    Her sugar mill. Lotte had made sure the deed was in Tiana's name, joking to the Fenners that Tiana 'didn't like to share' in a way that almost sounded wistful.

    Charlotte, for all that she was provided practically anything she'd ever want, loved to share, with Tiana in particular. It was like nothing she ever received she considered fully hers. 'We' just got a puppy, she would say. We should play in 'our' room.

    Tiana on the other hand, was incredibly possessive of the few things she did own. She was ready to play with Lotte's dog, and in Lotte's room, but she was never under any illusion who really owned those things. This was the box Tiana's things went into, and this was the box where Lotte's things went.

    She was as stubborn about that when she was a kid as she was just then.

    Sometimes, Clarisse still feels like she can't breathe. Tremors settle in her lungs then, a bloody battle she fights all on her own with every breath. Sometimes she thinks she's choking on Silena's blood, and the image of her beautiful, burnt features is etched into her mind like little else.

    She always ends up with Percy. Maybe because he's easy to be around now – probably because he understands. He understands what it's like to not be able to sleep. He knows what it's like to watch everyone laugh while the war still rages on in his heart. He knows what it's like when he feels like too much blood is on his hands and clogs up his throat.

    People think they're strangely close now. She's just tired, and Percy is too.
