Post TLD, Sherlock spends an extended time in enforced care and rehabilitation. He meets a young woman who believably cajoles him into interaction. John, meanwhile, is working and caring for Rosie and trying to come to terms with his feelings for Sherlock. When he and Sherlock tentatively reconnect, he finds himself jealous of Sherlock's new friend. The writing is superlative. Happy ending (though hard won) ahoy!

After John's abusive treatment of Sherlock in TLD and exhorting Sherlock to start a sexual relationship with The Woman ("...it will complete you as a human being"), their friendship and Sherlock's hopes for their future turn to dust. Just as John is beginning to work his way out of his own head (and arse) and tentatively makes attempts to accommodate Sherlock, Sherlock reaches the end of his patience and his ability to endure John's cruelties (unwitting and intended). He meets a devastatingly handsome and brilliant Italian criminal specialist, Roberto Zanardi, who doesn't hesitate to woo him. And Sherlock, believing he will never have John Watson, wants to be wooed. So begins a long, painful journey for both Sherlock and John. Sherlock, enjoying RZ's attentions, moves to Italy for a month-long trial period during which he will discover the wonder of sex and the potential of love. Despite his best efforts (the sex is amazing and RZ is unbelievably devoted), he fails to fall in love. John, crushed at having lost Sherlock, spends that terrible month in a welter of jealousy, regret, and loss, clinging to the hope that he might yet be able to woo Sherlock himself.
The writing is brilliant. Silver knows these characters on a soul-deep level and details their emotions with immense fondness mixed with head-shaking exasperation. In the tags she promises a Happy Johnlock Ending and, wow!, she delivers. Almost two thirds of the story concerns their reunion, with communication being front and center. A long, chewy, and so rewarding read.

Guilt-stricken and broken after Sherlock's suicide, John lives the life of a subsistence hunter, isolated in the frozen tundra of remote Alaska. Sherlock returns to his grieving friend and attempts to determine what he so badly miscalculated. John was supposed to grieve and heal and marry. One of the best omegaverse stories I've read. Sherlock bonds with John in order to gain his freedom while John goes off to war. Unfortunately, they share a soul bond and every time John has sex with someone, Sherlock knows it. It drives him to drugs, which nearly kill him. Long, chewy, their developing relationship when John comes home is hurty and often uncomfortable. They learn to communicate. So good!
