    Summary

Graveyard mud, heavy and dark, clinging to a stained and torn suit. One shoe missing, a leg bent awkwardly and blood staining a bare foot.

Milk white skin beneath the mud, black hair hanging in muddy clumps around his ears. Blue eyes staring back at him, animal-bright and dilated in the brief moment before he flinches back from the light with a cry of pain that stabs through Jason to the soul.

His shaking hand closes around the flashlight before he can even think about it, cutting off the piercing beam and letting it spill out in shards between his fingers. For a petrifying moment as his eyes readjust, he’s sure that when he looks again, there will be nothing there.

    “Tim?” he whispers.

The lean and ragged figure, tiny, god he’s so small, lowers his hands away from his face, away from his eyes wide and glittering almost silver in the moonlight.

Hands, mud-covered and torn. The red of his shredded fingernails is sickeningly dark in the broken light.

He’s vomiting before he even feels the bile making its way up his throat.

    Summary

“Of course you have contingencies for me,” Tim says, in a tone that suggests Bruce even pretending otherwise is both annoying and an insult to Tim's intelligence. “You have contingencies for everyone.”

“Not everyone,” Bruce says. “Not you.”

Bruce keeps his breathing even and measured, doesn’t betray for a second the relief he feels when Tim believes him. When Tim doesn't find the uglier, unsaid truth beneath Bruce’s carefully considered words.

The lack of contingencies for Red Robin does not mean that Batman trusts him infallibly.
The lack of contingencies for Red Robin means that a compromised Tim Drake is one of the things Bruce fears most.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The final analysis of the data is this: Tim is the most like Bruce of any of the Robins, but he was not raised by Bruce. Trained, but not raised. Tim is Bruce without Alfred, without a constant, steadying older presence who can always be counted on. He is Bruce without the manor, a single home that holds memories and weight and love and can always be returned to, even if it has to be repaired or rebuilt. He is Bruce without the memory of love to cling to. Tim's childhood is marked by parents absent by choice and not tragedy. His Father's love eventually emerged, but as a barbed thing, as liable to hurt as to protect, and any true resolution between them was cut short by murder.

Tim is Bruce without the core things that kept Bruce sane, that gave him his foundational ideals and moral stance.

And Bruce has missed nearly every opportunity to to do anything about it.

    Summary

Tim Drake never actually wanted to become part of the Robin-Batman-vigilante outfit. No, really. But the last Robin up and died, and now Batman is going crazy, and no one else is doing anything about it, so...Tim decides to become Robin. He might as well, right? At the very least it'll give him something to do while his parents are gone.

Still, Tim's not taking up the mantle until he can put a couple of things in order. Step one? Making sure the Joker can't get it into his head to kill another Robin. Not ever again. (Good thing Tim's not the one with a 'no killing' rule.)

And then after that? Well, after that it's only just a matter of keeping Batman from learning Tim's identity and subsequently chasing him off. Not until Bruce can get back on his feet and pick a new Robin, a real one this time. Easy-peasy.

    Sort of.
