Summary
“Wait.” Louis’ hand shoots out to grab his wrist, sending a shiver down Lestat’s spine. It’s the most they’ve touched in years, and his hand clenches in anticipation as he waits for Louis to continue. “Will you tell me more about your past?”
Lestat hesitates. It’s not that he wants to hide anything from Louis, fuelling suspicions that he’s deliberately keeping things from him, but there are memories that are too painful to remember, much less to be spoken out loud. Promises made to keep his knowledge to himself lest he starts a chain reaction of devastating events.
“Please,” Louis says, and his eyes seem to beg for something. “I want to know you. All of you. Will you help me understand?”
Or: Lestat allows himself to be vulnerable. An open and honest conversation ensues.

“So he’s holding a grudge a little longer than usual,” Louis says. “He’ll be there on the first day.” Charming all the new corps, he thinks bitterly; deciding whose legs he will have wrapped around his waist by the end of the week’s practice, if not before.“Not this time,” Armand says, and Louis suddenly recognises the look on his face. It’s the subdued panic of a man who is attempting to stem the flow of water through a cracked vessel with only his hands, incapable of patching it before every last drop escapes through his fingers. The same look, in fact, that he had given Louis when he’d thrown a duffel bag at Armand’s feet and told him he had fifteen minutes to grab his shit and get out. “Lestat doesn’t intend to quit the company. He intends to quit ballet.”
In the grey stupor of London, Louis is preparing the Azalea Gallery's forthcoming exhibition and worrying about Claudia. He doesn't plan to add wrangling Lestat, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet and his kind-of-ex-husband, into the mix – until Armand comes knocking, and makes him an offer he can't refuse.

Hedonist that he is, Lestat has never particularly cared to be held to the constraints of a schedule. Louis may enjoy the routine and predictability of something as prosaic as the requirements of managing a business–one of his many little idiosyncrasies that Lestat simultaneously enjoys and is frequently irritated by–but for him? Non. He can enjoy the artistry of a well-planned ball or the satisfaction of a business deal well-struck, but he’s always enjoyed the freedom of not quite knowing what’s coming next. In a long, long life, it’s far too easy to fall into a rut and find oneself constrained to it for decades before noticing.
Even with his taste for surprise, however, Louis holding out a tiny, sooty, sniffling child is a shock he is not best pleased by.
He flicks his eyes up from the big-eyed, dripping moppet, raising a brow and feeling his lip curl slightly in distaste. The child reeks of smoke and fear and God only knows what else.
“Put it back,” he says flatly.
