He’d tried to reassure himself through the years that she loathed him just as he did. But it wasn’t until now, as the feelings of betrayal and anger washed over him like Stinksap, that he wondered whether she’d ever uttered those words at all.

Kaz knocks on her door later that afternoon. She’s not sure how he knows which room is hers, and how he knows she’s in it. Inej lets him in and doesn’t pretend to be someone else: she allows him to see her dirty underwear on the floor, the twin empty gin bottles lying decrepit on her dresser, the dark smears on her table from when the ashtray had already overflowed and she’d needed to stub out the butts of her cigarettes.
She remembers the dozens of Styrofoam coffee cups in his room he’d had to move aside and she thinks he understands.

Jesper dealt another hand as he spoke, the gesture automatic; he was teaching her Zemeni card games in their free time. “So of course, Kaz had to turn it into the Dregs’ center of operations and make all of us climb the damn stairs right along with him.”
Though she wasn’t paid to do it, she gathered secrets about Kaz anyway. It was becoming a habit: anywhere she went, from the chip vendors to the roofs of chapels, she gathered.
