Mike swears he can hear a clock ticking, in tune to the beat of his heart, making his eardrums pulse. He wonders if it’s just his subconscious mind taunting him because he is very, very late to school.
And it’s all Will’s fault.
Coercing him to the backseat of the car before they could enter the school building. Batting his eyelashes at him innocently like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

Mike’s voice cracks slightly when he repeats, “He hurt Will.” More urgent this time. More desperate.
“Okay. I get that,” Hopper says slowly. “But it doesn’t explain why—”
Mike cuts him off, sharp. “If Will didn’t tell you, then I’m not telling you.”

Henry’s quiet for a beat. And then—

Will laughs, gentle. “You were a dickwad.”
Steve hums agreement. He considers something for a moment. “What about you?”
“What?”
“Your Tammy. Knowing what you did now, would you go back and love him all over again?”
“Yes,” Will says instantly. “Of course.”
“Why?”
Will looks at him then, so earnest, still so young, so full of love to give and so willing to give it away.
