Summary
"A doctor in his fifties that can’t handle the small life he’s led, even that is too much for him, too big. He wants to give it all to someone else, someone far more capable, more charismatic and smarter, just long enough so that he can sleep and try to forget about all of the wrong turns he’s made."
Dr. Robby doesn't get better after that first panic attack, spiraling down into his breaking point, but Dennis is right there to pick him back up, just like he did in that make shift morgue. He's there for all the tears and everything after.

Summary
Dennis recounted all of this on the rooftop every morning, almost like a prayer. How he’d gotten here. It wasn’t a sudden morning, waking up with the realization that God had abandoned him. It was slow, painful. Of feeling farther and farther from the light, of drifting away wordlessly from the only truth he’d ever known. There was no moment where it hit that he didn’t believe anymore. It just was.
Dennis had never been able to escape the ghost of Nebraska. But maybe with some confessions and newfound belonging, he finally could.
Or five times Dennis Whitaker held onto something, and the one time he let go.

Summary
When people said relationships can hurt, Dennis was pretty sure they didn’t mean this kind of hurt. He’d pictured emotional turmoil over arguments about who’s doing the dishes or what Netflix show to watch, not having to swallow his pride - and apparently, a bit of blood - because of what could generously be called a stupidly enthusiastic decision.

Or, Dennis was so excited to finally take the next step with Michael. Everything was going great, until he woke up in the middle of the night with the taste of blood in his mouth. What other choice was there but to go to emergency room...where they both work.
