Kou might’ve only met Sousuke's mom once, the longest summer of his life ago, but he remembers her well. Has met her indirectly hundreds of times since- in the shape of Mitsuba’s eyes, the similar way they enunciate their questions. (In the smell of incense, the realisation that there are some things you can never bring back. Kou stares at his untied laces, and hopes he can blame it on his burned up hand when he finds he doesn’t know how to look her in the eye.)

The night goes like this: wishes on fallen stars. DIY shaved ice on the corner of the rooftop. Brainfreeze. Yugi Amane teaching him how to find Andromeda, held captive at the edge of the horizon. The impossible tower, bent like a question in the dark. Mitsuba’s laughter when he finds that his candy has stained his tongue electric blue.
And Kou; uncertain why the sound of it makes him feel so unexplainably sad.

When she steps into her new class for the first time, Souko spots Reiko immediately.
There’s nobody else she could be- nobody has ever fitted a name better than the splinter of moonlight sat in the corner of the classroom, with wispy silver hair and bruised shins sticking out the bottom of her school skirt. Reiko stares into the yard with a mild sense of disinterest, her eyes sharp and cat-like and Souko barely hears when she’s asked to introduce herself to the rest of the class.

There’s another part of her that wants to know. That wants to see how the town she left behind has changed in her absence. Whether it’s still the same place that held and twisted her into someone less than herself, or whether it's grown just as much as she has. Curiosity has always been Aoi’s downfall. Staring into dark corridors, the far shore, that haunted old town by the river- and wondering if she’ll see something looking back at her.
Besides- it’s been years since she’s seen the snow.
