New York is three hundred square miles of Castle Byers. (For the most part, Jonathan still looks out for him.) He was never selfish enough to include himself in his dreams for what Will’s life could be like one day. Of course, he always wanted to be in his brother’s life, in one way or another. He didn’t dare dream for this. For this amazing, secret, scary little thing they’ve turned into.
Now, Will has everything he needs. A flourishing social life full of freaks just like him. An impressive college portfolio which will lead to a prosperous career. And his big brother’s cock.

The place is not important, he writes next, though he doesn’t quite believe it. He hesitates before finishing the sentence, aware of how easily importance sneaks in through description. It was small and contained, a place that did not announce itself. There was water nearby; a wide, lush river fed by three smaller rivers and three waterfalls. There were trees that didn’t mind being left alone. He chooses the words carefully.
He doesn’t name the girl. That’s another rule. Names are hooks; names are how things get pulled back, dragged into the light, whether they want to be or not. He keeps her distant on purpose, like a figure at the edge of a painting, half-shadowed, easy to miss if you’re not looking for her. Enough to recognise, not enough to touch.
Mike Wheeler decides to write a story about a girl he used to know. He tells himself it's only a story.
Whether any of it is real depends on where you stop reading.

He tells himself this is still only a story. That this is what writers do: borrow, reshape, recreate, pretend they reinvented things that were handed to them already bruised. He tells himself that recognition does not mean confession, that proximity is not the same as truth.
She listens and understands what he is really saying: that he is alive in a way that doesn’t depend on her watching over him from in between the pages.
She listens; she always listens. But she no longer waits for the story to finish.
He doesn’t finish it.
He understands now—not fully, but well enough—that stories don’t always need endings to be true. Some things survive by remaining unresolved, by refusing to be fixed into place, by staying open long enough to be lived inside. Some truths just become watered-down versions of reality if you try to tie them down.
He thinks about the story as it is now: unfinished and held open.
He thinks about how often he once believed endings were the same thing as truth.
He thinks about how some things don’t end so much as continue somewhere else.
He thinks about how some things don’t end when you stop writing them.
He thinks about how some things don’t need him to follow.
He thinks about the girl, not as she was written, but as she might be, moving forward without waiting for his sentences to catch up.
He thinks about the girl, and this time the thought doesn’t feel like remembering.
He thinks: this is only a story, but he’s not so sure it is anymore.

Sometimes, he fancies this whole thing slightly incestuous. They have the same name. In one of his notebooks that nobody will ever read, he’s started writing A Tale Of Two Williams. One was the sun. One was the moon. Billy’s skin is a soft golden color, even in the winter. Will is always snowy. Never tans. Only burns. In moments like this, he’s just reflecting Billy’s energy. Billy fills him up and makes him feel alive when they touch.
Maybe Will is just starving for anything that resembles affection. Looking for an emotional connection in all the wrong places. He’s always been that way. Maybe it would be a pathology, the constant desire for people who don’t want him back. But nobody wants him. So it doesn’t matter.
