Summary
John Smith has followed a routine and spent his days alone for just about as long as anybody can remember. He eats, goes to work, eats, more work, goes home, eats and marks, and sleeps, just as he likes it.
Clara Oswald is young, has just gotten her phD, married her childhood sweetheart, and gotten a job as a professor in one of London's finest universities. She's also just moved into the flat next to John's.
When the two meet, there's an instant connection, but surely it's nothing beyond friendship. Clara is happy (or so she says), and John doesn't mind being relegated to being her best friend, but as they grow closer, John develops the sneaking suspicion that Clara's life isn't exactly what it seems.

Carol feels the confusion slip onto her face. Nervousness creeps up her spine again. “Me?”
“I know everything that anybody has ever thought about you, Carol. Every memory. Every feeling. Helen. Your ex-girlfriends. Your dentist. It’s like I have a Carol encyclopedia in my head.”
Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.
