His fathers voice appears before his does, standing in the shadows like a true ninja, the kitchen light flickers to reveal him, standing there, slightly hunched in his night robe.
Mikey straights in his seat at the table, eyes round, caught out with his mouth agape as he attempts to push out an explanation before it comes out as a jumble of stuttering words.
“What are you doing up so late? You were supposed to be in bed hours ago.”
This much was true — things had been hectic around their home in the last few weeks and Splinter had pulled out his dad card more than once on Mikey and his brothers: a curfew and bedtime being part of that despite their collective disdain.
But as easy as it was for the rat to send him to bed at an appropriate time, falling asleep wasn’t so simple it would seem, after the good few hours Mikey had spent mindlessly staring up at his bedroom ceiling, he’d soon decide to perhaps do something useful with the hours he’d be awake.
Hence why he was here now, doing what he was doing.

It’d been a harsh winter, as it always was when you were living underground in a cold and damper sewer with four growing young boys — their usual quick on-the-go meal of algae and worms usually wasn’t as accessible when places where said algae and worms often lived were frosted over, so Splinter usually had to rely on what food banks and leftovers he could forage and find.
Which, in the winter when you were living in a city that was crowded with people hungry like his family was, struggling like he was.

Canon divergence from “Requiem” & “Owari” where there was no immediate assault on Shredder after the death of Splinter. Instead, Shredder takes off in pursuit of his prey whilst they mourn and heal, looking for the perfect moment to tie off some loose, final ends.
Some very old, loose ends.
