The language of his planet wasn’t exactly the most difficult for Peter Nureyev to part with. Anything that reminded him of the comforts of home was strategically suppressed with time and careful practice. In fact, any strange or telling comforts were suppressed as well.
Only after several months aboard the Carte Blanche did he realize he was laughing at streams he insisted that he hated and listening to music he’d long since spurned, if not for a specific alias. Even though a part of him felt more trapped than ever, it was at constant war with the urge to relax, and he had to say, it often felt like the urge to relax was winning.

He put a foot over the ledge of the ship, preparing himself to step over, despite everything in his body screaming at him that he was an idiot with survival instincts worse than Mick Mercury’s— and stumbled.
Juno screamed shrilly on the way down and felt the ragged cutting of his vocal cords tearing themselves to shreds under the volume of it.
The way his chest sounded when it smacked the top of the Ruby 7 reminded him of how birds had hit the windows of houses when they’d had a brief stint on S’tul Tus. Juno wheezed, breath punched out of him with a sledgehammer.

Soon, I’ll play too deep in his head and find memories worse than anything my overactive imagination can conjure up, and ones that will endear me to him more than any anecdote about stealing from the rich to give to the infirm. But first, he’ll tighten his arms around me and whisper "I’m glad", breath hot and wet on the shell of my ear. First, I’ll fall asleep in his arms, my hand falling out of his hair and coming to rest on the back of his neck. First, every last one of my fears about how it will feel for him to hold me will come true and I won’t even regret it.
And, first, I’ll be dragged bodily from his arms, and we’ll start again.
