“I am so sorry, Shane,” he kept muttering under his breath as he consumed more and more of the venomous clear liquid. “So sorry, moya lyubov.”
He kept going. He had no idea what time it was when he opened the second bottle, or when he reached for the first box of pills. All he could see, in his hazy state, was his mama, who was holding her arms out for him, calling of him, telling him to come closer. To be brave and come to her.
He did as she asked.
He thought about her as he crinkled the first packet of pills, popping all seven from one strip into his hand. He wondered what was going through her head as she poured the small pills from the bottle he found next to her into her dainty hands. He wondered if she thought of him, like he thought of her.
“Be with you soon, mama,” Ilya breathed, as he swallowed the pills down with a mouthful of vodka. “Me and you together again.”
OR, where ilya is depressed and he wants to feel his mother's comfort again. shane has no idea, but he'll do anything to be with ilya, to make him better. he'll drive all night. he would call ilya's mom.

Summary
To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies aren’t growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin – humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could “hang” with the big guns on the team.
That being said, there’s still some part of Ilya that balks at the request by the gaggle of rookies to watch The Iron Giant, a veritable children’s movie at the team’s latest movie night.
OR: Five times Shane and Ilya were the support system for the Centaur rookies they dreamed of having when they were younger.

Shane picks up almost instantly. “Ilya?” His voice is sharp, already awake. “What’s wrong?”
Ilya clears his throat. His voice comes out quiet, reserved, almost childlike. “You were right,” he admits. “I… I have been throwing up.”
There is silence from Shane and Ilya feels a wave of panic run through him.
“I feel very terrible,” Ilya adds, blinking fast as his eyes burn. “Could you please just come?”
or, Shane and Ilya's first food poisoning adventure as husbands.

“I was never going to hit you, Hollander!” Ilya blurted out, eyes shining. “You make fool out of me. And worse…” he took a sharp breath, his hands finding his temple. “And worse is, you hit me.”
The words hung between them, heavy and ugly.
Shane’s breath caught in his throat. He wanted so badly to reach for Ilya, cling to him like an anchor.
“I waited,” Ilya continued, voice shaking now, his control beginning to crack. “I waited for you to stop. I waited for you to look at me like you recognized me. You didn’t.”
