She could still recall how Makoto would lean in, tuck her small nose into Yae’s ear, and whisper saccharine poems about Ei, yearning for her twin to break from her shadow. She had silently pleaded, between warm kisses pressed into her pink fur, for Yae to look over Ei if something were to happen. Perhaps she knew…that one day…Ei might be alone. Perhaps she always knew. “She loved you so much, her dear sister.”
“She loved you too,” Ei said, her voice is indescribable. It was hard to tell if she was mourning or if she was being nostalgic. “You were there for her when I wasn’t.”
“Yes, I was,” Yae agreed before her eyes turned dark, shifting over to stare at Ei’s calm gaze. “But Makoto wasn’t there for me when you were gone.”
