Summary
Garroth could hear his Lady's footsteps approaching behind him.
He held his arm out, prepared as she looped her hand through the crook of his elbow and spun around him, giggling as she did so. He wasn't sure why she insisted on this little ritual everytime they reunited, but he couldn't refuse her. It was harmless, and in all honesty he enjoyed her unusual way of greeting him.

Summary
"As the moon rose higher and higher into the sky, it got worse. His muscles felt like they were ripping themselves apart, his teeth felt like they were falling out his skull, and the bite burned hotter and hotter. He cried out, screaming forgiveness from the Matron, sobbing out apologies. If this was a punishment for running from his fate, he had learned his lesson. If it would stop, he would turn back that very instant and return with his head hung low, willing to accept whatever punishment his father felt fit best. He would take the damn arranged marriage, would marry whoever they wanted if it would just stop."
Garroth Ro'meave ran away from home, the first act of rebellion he had ever dared to commit. In return, he became a monster.

Summary
"If I close my eyes, I can almost imagine nothing has changed,"
Laurance had his head tilted back, drinking in the last fading light of the sunset. The sunlight caught on his brown hair, turning it to gold. They had found themselves wandering Phoenix Drop together, and had ended up in the same spot they had many times over the years. It was a little clearing in the forest where they used to spar. When they used to frequent it, it had nice flat ground, making it a perfect place to practice. These days, overgrown roots choked the forest floor— no place for sword work, but a fine one for conversation.
Laurance look different than he had a few weeks ago— no, than he had a year ago. It had been a year for Laurance, he had to remember that. There were dark circles under his eyes now. His mouth was almost always pressed into a slight frown. It looked foreign on his face; Laurance always had a smile forming on the corners of his mouth, like he could barely keep it in. There was always a laugh building behind his teeth, and Garroth had always found comfort in it, even when he was annoyed by the other man's presence. He had taken it for granted.
He missed it now that it was gone.

Summary
"Laurance's face scrunched up the way it always did when he was getting mad at Garroth. "Don't lie to me, Garroth. Or should I say keep lying to me, that is."
Shit. He thought he had been doing a good job of hiding his anxiety, but of course Laurance would notice. Sometimes, Garroth thought Laurance knew him better than he knew himself. "Uh, you're being weird Laurance. What could I possibly be hiding from you?"
"Whatever happened at that damn cabin," Laurance crossed the room in three large strides, until he was standing just in front of Garroth. "Everyone who went has been acting weird!""

Summary
Zenix waited, lips slacked and teeth bared, for her dark stare to shift - for her to twitch or writhe. For her to spring back to life and bolt from his lap; for Garroth to break through the undergrowth and startle at the sight of him bowed in the dirt, drooling upon a carcass. But all that came were the slow, rattling heaves of the canopies overhead, watching him with hollow eyes.
Spring has arrived, and Phoenix Drop is dying.

Summary
Some blame fell on the Antivan Crows’ training methods and traditions, but that was not the whole reason. She was a product of the same traditions, and instead of stopping the cycle, she perpetuated it — adding her own generational Dellamorte cruelty to it. There were no gentle ways to train thoughtless weapons to wield knives for the Crows; it was always a sacrifice. In order to take a life, you had to shut down the insides that screamed about morality, the suffering of those left behind, and the need for justification. To switch off those emotions, Crows had always been cruel to their fledglings.
Caterina invites Lucanis and Rook for dinner. It is time to put all past grievances behind them.

Summary
There is a room in the depths of Villa Dellamorte. Dark, dusty, filled with furniture covered in white cloth, hidden away for some half remembered purpose, old even when Lucanis and Illario were children. Now, Lucanis watches Illario’s tall stature, shoulders straight, never slouching, familiar as Lucanis’s own breath in his lungs but the shadow he casts in the room is all wrong. They are too old to be in here. In the ghost room.
While Rook is trapped in the Fade, Lucanis and Illario revisit a childhood haunt.

Summary
Rook knows what Lucanis’ face looks like, in death. Remembers his desperate scramble the first time he saw him lying against the cold stones of the fade’s landscape, unreactive as he called his name, cupped his face, shook him gently, desperately. The heavy weight of his lifelessness as he pulled his body to his chest, curled shaking fingers into his hair and begged, please no, don’t be gone, don’t leave me, don’t leave me in this alone—
Rook sobs.
The sound rips out of his throat like the burst of a dam, a single, horrified gasp as the world around him— cold, dead, empty— presses in.
———
Months after defeating the gods, Rook is still hellbent on pushing away his own trauma to focus on those around him.
It eventually, inevitably, comes back to bite him in the ass.
