She wished to curse the fall then, but something about the pattern of the droplets stayed her tongue. They looked so small and fragile, like something that deserved protection. At the time, she was five months pregnant; her baby and her dress were both fed by her blood.
"I wish my baby would be born with eyes like that leaf and freckles like these specks of blood," she said to the crispy air.
The air didn't answer. But fate would, four months later.
