Summary
He hadn’t meant to fall asleep. The combination of unconsciousness with the fear his nightmares brought was a recipe for disaster. He’d tried insisting on a room alone for that reason. Wolfwood was stubborn, though, and far more stubborn when he was worried. By the time they were done arguing in front of the innkeeper, he’s pretty sure the poor woman feared for Vash’s safety, of all things.
Wolfwood had grinned at him, smug, ridiculously pleased with himself, and Vash had felt a flutter of creeping pain in his chest, proving just a little more incapable of preventing his heart from bleeding out into the world.

Summary
Home wasn’t far now. Vash pushed as fast and as long as he dared, urging the tomas through the blistering heat of the days until the set of the first sun. Then he continued through the dimming light and the creeping cold until the set of the second.
If it was just him, he’d have kept going through the nights as well. The tomas needed rest, though, as did Jessica.

Summary
Wolfwood looked back, staring at where their hands met, eyes barely widening, but expression otherwise unreadable. Vash couldn’t say it, couldn’t bring himself to ask, the selfishness of it stung like bile in his throat. He couldn’t bear to let go, either. Any attempt at words just echoed through the chasm inside him, bouncing back on themselves until it was white noise, pointless and empty and lost. He swallowed. It was late. They were both exhausted, and he was keeping Wolfwood here in the cold.
“…please.”

Wolfwood wasn’t sure if it was too much drink or not enough that had resulted in Vash taking most of the bullets for himself. Regardless, no one else had been hurt, with nearly every shot fired lodged safely in Vash’s own sternum.
