Summary
People—mostly the other children—often asked Pepa and Bruno about when they received their doors and gifts, long after everyone already knew all the details by heart. They didn’t ask Santiago, who wasn’t as fun a storyteller, and whose quiet healing wasn’t apparent until days later anyway. An involuntary vision and sudden storm were more exciting, especially when Pepa summoned a thunderhead for her audience and Bruno flashed his glowing eyes. They both left out the part where Bruno got so confused about what was happening, and Pepa so upset that he knew about her magic room before she did, that they both started crying.
Years later, they had also stopped mentioning the moment that Santiago best remembered: when the three of them looked at the embossed letters on the doorknobs and realized one was a P for Pepa, not a J for Josefa. Pepa—who was only ever Josefa when she was in trouble and disliked sharing a name with the unpleasant Josefa Venegas—had traced a fingertip over the letter and beamed.

“You’re sure you don’t want to stay the night?” Agustín asked as Bruno slid into his sandals.
“Yeah.” A side effect of the magic was that, if one of the Madrigals did anything unusual, the whole town knew within the day. Bruno had enough of that without anyone wondering what he was doing all night with two men who may as well have been married to each other. And, oh god, what if his hermanas asked him? What if Mamá did? Nope. Not risking it. “Gotta- family breakfast, you know.”

The man in the mirror was not the infamous el Brujo Loco, but he did wear the same dark blue jacket, claimed from the long-dead Señora Figueroa’s worldly effects and last worn by her longer-dead esposo. The stiff, boxy shoulders jutted out past Bruno’s actual shoulders, and he couldn’t decide if he liked the effect or not.
Last night, when Bruno planned this, the old jacket hanging in the back of his closet had seemed like a nice surprise. It wasn’t the sort of thing that men wore on dates to the cantina, or to have friendly drinks with other men, but he and José weren’t meeting at the cantina. And José had said he found it... intriguing, when they were younger. Attractive, even. Somehow.

Summary
Alma stopped just within the treeline. When she arrived at the river, heartbeat clamoring like hoofbeats in her ears, she almost expected to find Pedro still there, lying where she left him. Instead, she found only her nieta, looking young and fragile where she huddled on the bank.
For a moment, Alma couldn’t move. Then she took a deep breath and touched the locket on her chatelaine, now holding Pedro’s portrait and a single pink thread. She would not lose them both here.
When Mirabel took her hands and pulled her into the water, she gained instead.
