    The Thirteenth: Midnight

    It suddenly occurred to Viktor that if he went missing,

    There would be very little done about it.

    Not until the next morn. Not when it was easy to feign Viktor retiring early and could not be disrupted. Not when the house swallowed voices and only mirrored them as faint murmurs in the dark. Not when by sunrise, Viktor would be long gone, into the woods that none knew; into the house that caged and killed his last kin;

    Into the cold mercy of a madman.

    He could not run.

    He could hardly fight back.

    Viktor receives a letter informing him of the death of a distant family member and the inheritance left to him.

    Jayce drags their friends along to make sure Viktor doesn't get possessed/killed/bodysnatched in the process of attaining homeownership.

    Truly, Viktor cares very little about this task. He knows, in a way so few proper uppercity citizens would admit, that the people producing the value for these Houses never have much to do with the family themselves. J has done more to earn a house name in the last year than this 'Jayce' has likely done his entire life. Viktor expects this Mr. Talis knows very little about the physicality behind all the beautiful metal crafts funding whatever pampered life he’s been living since his mysterious dismissal from the academy.

    It's been nearly four years since the unfortunate break-in that led to Jayce's quiet expulsion from the Academy and, in a round about way, the beginnings of peace between Piltover and Zaun. His life is good on paper, but he mostly just feels like he's living a story half told and forgettable. So, with the business running well enough for the Academy to be within his un-sponsored means, he's finally making good on Heimerdinger's promise that he could return once his 'lesson' was learned. If only this beautiful, rude assistant would give Jayce the time of day to argue his case.

    “You left without saying a word! I didn't know what had happened to you after the blockade! If you were captured or worse—and to finally see you after all these years and it's there, at some godsawful slave market and–and dressed up like that–”

    “You gave them Hextech, Jayce! Our life's work! When I found out, I thought it was a lie! You promised me you wouldn't–would never do such a thing, and yet you went behind my back and did it anyway–”

    “I did it for you!” Jayce shouts.

    All air snuffs from Viktor's lungs. “You… you what?”

    Piltover and Zaun have been locked in a war for seven years with a precarious peace finally on the horizon. Viktor, an omega in Zaun, has been captured and sent to the markets to be sold off to Piltover’s elite.

    He didn't expect the buyer to be his childhood friend.

    Or: Finally reunited after several years, Viktor becomes the unwilling pet of Councilor Jayce Talis.

    “You’re not gonna believe this,” Ekko says, slightly out of breath. “So I’m hustling Talis down at the forge, right? And I’m giving him the works.”

    He ticks off ‘the works’ on his fingers as he elaborates, “I complimented his work, I name dropped Councilor Medarda, I went on and on about how much her investment really means to us, since you know their families are like this,” he crosses two fingers together tightly.

    An effective visual, surely, had Viktor actually been looking.

    “Then, I mentioned our project scaling up and he hooked it up for free.”

    That, finally, gets Viktor’s full attention. He spins around on his stool, flipping his goggles onto his forehead. The heavy thud of Ekko’s haul is enough to imply just how big of a ‘hook up’ this was.

    “What exactly did you say to him?”
