Summary
Fifteen years after Prince Zuko found the Avatar in an iceberg and brought him home, the Fire Nation wins a decisive victory against the Earth Kingdom rebel forces.
And on the same day, Fire Lord Zuko finds out he’s dying.
It will be hard for Zuko to say, later, if it’s more the hoped-for end to the rebellion or more the death sentence that prompts him to finally go looking for his Uncle. But either way, Zuko is determined to find the man – and kill him. Only destroying the Turncoat General Iroh and his best field commander Warrior Suki will crush the resistance's hope, and end the war. Only this can achieve Zuko's lifelong goal of Fire Nation world supremacy before Zuko dies.
That Fire Lord Azula sends her trusted adviser Sokka along with Zuko is an annoyance, but it won't stop him from achieving his goal.

Zuko looked round the room wildly. A trash can stood near his velvet-draped door. He bolted for it and heaved, the contents of his stomach reminding him that he once again had not eaten dinner last night. Stringy blue half-digested liquor pooled at the bottom of the bin.
He collapsed back to lying on the ground. It had been three months since Fire Lord Zuko invaded his own city of Ni-Ban. About five months since a terrorist attack from Ni-Ban-based Fire Nation First left almost a thousand Harbor City citizens dead. Five or six years since Zuko realized his bending had dried up, giving him yet something else to keep hidden every day. Eight years since Zuko killed his younger sister Kiyi. Eleven years since Azula disappeared.
He tried to think back. When had it gotten this bad? Had he had a better grasp on things, before Kiyi died? On the day Kiyi drank the tea... what had Zuko done that morning? Had he slept in a bed the night before? Had he appreciated the smell of honeysuckle as he passed through the royal courtyard? Had he signed laws and given policy orders with faith rather than sick fear?

Or, 13 years after Ozai's defeat, the world worse, the gaang broke up, and Zuko needs help.
