King thinks, Me? and looks over his shoulder. Standing very close to each other near the store entrance are the guy he was talking to and the guy he nearly walked into, both looking at King with interest. Oh, fuck that, King thinks, after one single solitary glance at the boyfriend, he’s not ugly at all.
Nothing about this world is fair.
The hot boyfriend gives King an apologetic grin and says to the guy, “You wanna be any louder, baby?” in a voice sweeter than honey.
The guy grimaces and tells his boyfriend, “Don’t call me that in public,” then gives King a sheepish smile.
Apparently they communicate just fine."

“Okay?” Gram said, not sure what he meant.
“You don’t just fall in love with people at the drop of a hat. That’s not how love works. It would be so cheap if it did. I’m not in love with you, but that sort of makes sense, doesn’t it? Because I was in love with Todd. I never thought about stepping out on him. I can’t just flip a switch and stop loving Todd and start loving you instead.”
“Okay,” Gram repeated, because that all made sense, and it was fair, even as his heart sank.
“But that doesn’t mean I’ll never love you. It doesn’t mean I can’t. It just means that I don’t right now. I think we should start at the beginning, you know? I kept thinking about how I could love you instead of Todd. But that’s not fair to you. Todd is in the past. He doesn’t have anything to do with me and you. They don’t push him when he evades personal questions. They fill his awkward silences with jokes and banter with each other. They listen whenever he finds something to say.
