Summary
He was seventeen again. He didn’t want to be. He hated this time of his life. Yet there he was back in boot camp, listening to the drill sergeant yell instructions as aggressively as possible, the usual. Z felt terribly out of place, forced up to Georgia for the infantry portion of training. Z felt uneasy watching how the other men cheered and riled each other up. Something felt wrong, this wasn’t ever mentioned in the pamphlets and ceremonies. Despite his concern, he knew better than to question the sergeant. That never ended well.
Behind him a gunshot exploded, and an unexpected man’s voice screamed out in pain. As Z swung back around, he heard a heavy thud and saw a fellow trainee on the ground clutching his neck. Z’s breath catches in his throat watching blood spurt and pool from the wound on the man’s neck.

Z has a nightmare where he’s 17 again in boot camp, young and weak. After a series of misunderstandings Z finds himself running for his life, dodging violent men and clinging to his gun. Blood fills his mind.

A work exploring Hateno and a makeshift sanctuary.
Her basket's on the table, palms on either side of it. The house dark. Dim.
The door hasn’t closed behind her. Zelda turns her head, peering through windswept hair. Light pours in behind him: his silhouette standing there on the threshold of his own home like a vampire awaiting an invitation. She almost laughs at the sight. The man who cut the Devil to pieces is scared to follow after a woman with a chip on her shoulder? How far they’ve both fallen.
“It’s your house,” she points out.
Permission to enter. He does even though it’s not hers to give. It’s only a few steps, of course. Can’t break the rule. Five feet. Always five feet apart. The door closes.
She wants to break something. An old habit’s under heavy consideration.

Blue is Kanto Champion for thirty-nine minutes.
That’s it. Technically, he’s part of the Hall of Fame, technically he’s an accepted Champion. Technically, the title was his once, so it will always be his. Technically, he can’t lose it. He just loses being the present Champion.
He also, briefly, held the Kanto record for youngest ever Pokemon League champion. That was until Red, three months younger, caught up to him.
Really, Blue hadn’t even been surprised.
