|“Name’s Sylus,” he said, as if Zayne hadn’t already been told. “You?”
“Doctor Li. And don’t get comfortable. You’re not staying long.”
“Shame.” Sylus’ lips curled into a smirk, lazy but deliberate. “You’ve got nice hands. Steady. Bet they’re good for more than just cutting people open.”
Zayne didn’t blush but he felt a flicker of heat in his chest that he promptly smothered to death. “Flirt with someone else. I’m busy.” |

Summary
In a canon-divergent, post–Season 3 Hawkins—where Nancy and Jonathan have already gone their separate ways a series of erratic demodog attacks begins tearing through the town. A new strategy emerges: pairing Steve's instinctive, close-combat fighting with Jonathan's sharp eye for patterns and evidence, and sending them out together as a rapid-response team.
Neither of them is happy about it.
It doesn’t help that they’re also working the same shifts at Family Video—alongside a coworker who seems far more comfortable with Jonathan than anyone else. Between overlapping hours, increasingly dangerous patrols through Hawkins and the slow unearthing of old resentments, Steve and Jonathan are forced into a partnership built on proximity, necessity, and a mutual refusal to acknowledge how well they work together.
As the demodog threat escalates, the line between enemies, allies, and something far more dangerous begins to blur.
Some threats you can fight head-on.
Others get under your skin first. -

Summary
Steve’s eyes softened. “Yeah. Because I do care, Byers. Can’t you see that I do? I mean- fuck. I care for you so fucking much that I’m scared to accept it,” Steve blurted out,
“…because I’ve made this image for myself, and in it I can’t even consider caring for you!”
The words hung between them, small and fragile, but they hit Jonathan harder than he expected.
A moment of silence followed by a change in closeness. Steve’s hand brushed against Jonathan’s arm accidentally- or maybe not…And yet, neither of them moved away.
Jonathan’s breath hitched slightly, the tension in the air crackling. He could feel Steve’s heartbeat against him, rapid and nervous.
“I…” Jonathan began, voice low, then stopped. He swallowed, stepping closer until their bodies were nearly touching. “I care for you. I also care for you, Steve…But I- we shouldn’t…”
