“Is something the matter?” he questioned, tired eyes meeting hers.
Velanni blinked and allowed herself to get closer to him. There was still a respectable distance between them, but she was close enough to make out the threading details on his expensive high-collared shirt, the engravings on the silver chain and buttons of his vest, and most importantly, the subtle rise and fall of his chest. He wasn’t taking deep breaths, so it raised slightly then lowered.
Was he controlling his breaths around her? Was he nervous?
“...Velanni?” he ventured, his voice ringing through her. "Rook?"

Rook couldn't sleep, didn't want to sleep. After all they'd gone through, after all she'd gone through, she would rather avoid the plagues her dreams brought her. If not a nightmare, then a stubborn elven god was there to bother her.
But Lucanis always had coffee ready. And sleep deprived Crows were always known for their wise decision making.

Probably one of my favorite series ever. I’ve read these several times and will continue to reread these. Even after reading them several times I still go “what’s going to happen next?” because the writing is so good.
