"John calls him from across the ocean. They haven’t spoken since New York three weeks ago, Paul by himself on a Sunday morning eating a slice of pizza standing up on 73rd and Broadway. But John can’t be bothered to cover the space between this moment and that one with anything more than hello. I can’t believe it, he says, almost at once. I’m just staring at Sean and I can’t believe it."
