    The path becomes steeper as she ascends and she’s panting a little by the time a square wooden structure comes into view, nestled idyllically between trees and huge, likely ancient boulders (well…modeled to give the impression of being ancient). The mannequin that greets her at the front desk gives her bloodstained outfit a disdainful once-over before directing her to some showers.
    “Please wash thoroughly before visiting our onsen.”
    “Your…sorry, your what?” She should have asked Gangle to come.
    “The hot spring, jeez, Pomni.” Jax is suddenly there behind her again, and he makes her jump like he hasn’t since her first day at the Circus, leaving him snickering at her expense. “I thought you and Ribbons were close! Her feelings are gonna be so hurt when she learns you’ve been faking an interest in her anime trope tangents.”

    [In which the plan had been to make them bone in a hot spring, but I plonked them down in there and they just got to talking and bonding and being vulnerable with each other and it was so cute and soft and wholesome so I let them do what they wanted and they wanted to kiss at the end but not how you think.]

It felt too big for her body, barely contained inside her, like the sheer force of it could split her skin and explode out of her. It crackled through her bones like lightning and they strained under the pressure, moments from snapping.

    The air tasted burnt. Electric. The ancient words filled Marcille’s throat, choking, bursting out of her with such strength she wasn't even sure if it was her speaking them.

    Never, for even a fraction of a moment, did she regret it. Not even when she felt her mouth fill with blood and her ribs crack, not even when she collapsed face-first onto the concrete.

    “Marcille,” Falin gasped, the first word she could manage. Her own voice sounded foreign to her ears. Wrong.
