"How did you meet mom?"
It's a loaded question, and Mike is not sure it’s one he can answer truthfully. He’d like to be honest with his daughter; to tell her of the ins and outs of how her parents fell in love. She's an inquisitive child, but any mention of the supernatural or El's appearance at that particular moment in time so many years ago would no doubt raise alarm bells, even for a nine-year-old.
He settles for, "on a walk in the woods."

It’s been years since Mike has seen her in person—more than a mirage, a ghost flashing before him when he closes his eyes at night—and though butterflies still flutter at the sight of her, there’s an ache in his stomach, too, no doubt brought on by questions of what will happen next. Will she welcome him with open arms into this new life? How has Eleven changed as a person and as a woman? Will she even recognize him? If she does, will she feel the same longing?
“Something led me here, I guess," he tells her. It’s bullshit, and they both know it, but it sounds a hell of a lot healthier than, “I promised I’d follow you into oblivion, so here I am.”

His eyes kept fluttering close, almost as if he was trying to imagine something that wasn’t there and hadn’t been there in a long time—something that would never be there again no matter how many pennies he wished on and fingers he crossed.
He felt her all time. Every moment, everywhere. It was like when he lost her the first time, except something felt sickeningly more concrete this time around. He saw her in girls that snorted when they laughed. He saw her in girls who were growing their hair out, which El was so excited to do. He saw her in tattoos and waffles and Miami Vice and purple eyeshadow and pop music.
Or
El vanishes when the bridge collapses, and Mike’s friends force him to go to senior prom and he gets drunk and lets out all his emotions about El.

But he’d look at the empty seat beside him, over and over, a tongue poking at the gap where a tooth used to be. But he’d toss and turn all night, not letting her slip from his mind in the hopes that she’d at least appear in his dreams.
But his heart pounds, insistent, as he stumbles around the town, like it knows something.
