Summary
Dustin wasn't even supposed to be back in town today, let alone here at Steve's 16U ball game. Fresh from completing his undergrad from the Purdue School of Engineering, his graduation party wasn't until next weekend. Give him time to pack his shit up, party with his friends, say some goodbyes. It was almost a week earlier than Steve expected to see him.
"Play Ball!" the ump called. His kids were ready, as he'd taught them to be. But Steve?
And all it took was three seconds of swivelling on his feet, drawn to search for Dustin in the crowd among the parents and family members on the stands for it to happen. Derek chirped, the batter hesitated, decided last minute to swing at a pitch coming in too far outside, and cracked a foul ball line drive into Steve's right temple.

Steve doesn't have the grades to go to University, but his father does get him a job. It's at the pharmaceutical facility on the outskirts of Hawkins, where his father works, but he'll be in a totally different department.
In fact, it doesn't seem like much of a department at all.It's just one young man, who seems more mad scientist, than pharmaceutical developer.
Dustin Henderson, a former boy genius, who is now a twenty something year old jaded asshole that no one wants to work with - except Steve, who has no choice in the matter if he doesn't want to get kicked out.And, it's starting to feel like whatever Henderson is working on isn't actually related to medicine.

Dustin catches Steve’s gaze and holds it. “You’re my best friend. You know that nothing could ever change that.”
Steve can’t seem to tear his eyes away from Dustin’s. The weight of everything they went through in the last five years hangs in the air. There’s too much to say and nothing to say that they don’t already know.

It’s a story told through phone calls, postcards, holidays at home, road trips, and Lord of the Rings references. It’s a story of learning what to let go of, what to hold onto and how to find a path forward. Mostly, it’s a story about love.
