“What sort of game, darling?”
"I didn’t really have one in mind… Do you?”
Robin’s eyes closed for a moment, and when they opened, her gaze lifted and locked onto Nami with a knowing scrutiny that made her squirm. “If you didn’t have a game in mind,” she began, “then you must have had a gamble in mind, instead. Don’t you?”
“Maybe something.” Nami took a breath and leaned towards Robin. “It’s been a while since we had any time to ourselves, and I thought we could… do something to have a little fun.” Robin smiled, unruffled, but Nami saw the tips of her ears flush pink as she caught Nami’s implication.
“Something like… the winner gets her way with the loser.”

“Soho 0827,” came the voice on the other end of the phone, and Ellie felt a twist of surprise in her stomach. The voice was high-pitched, light and pretty, but her accent and cadence sounded antiquated, like something out of a movie from the fifties or sixties.
“Hi,” Ellie said nervously. She cleared her throat and tried again, hoping she wouldn’t stutter. “I saw your advert for a room to rent.”

The door of Ellie's new home opens to the face of an impossibly beautiful stranger; blonde and clad in a red dress that looked like silken rubies against her pale skin. Ellie felt the words torn out of her throat when she met her eyes, thinking to herself that this Ms. Collins– I don’t mind if you call me Sandie, she’d said– wouldn't be the worst person to share a house in London with; far from it.
The first few nights that Ellie dreams about her, she writes it off as her own desire; shoves it down to be forgotten in the morning and relegates her shameful thoughts to the darkness of her bedroom. After a few in a row, though, they start growing stranger– marred with blood and crimson-stained teeth, more nightmare than fantasy.

Kid clenched his fist tight enough to feel his red-painted nails dig painfully into his palm, the pain a welcome distraction but not one sharp enough to take his mind out of the moment; to drown out the sound of Killer's laughter in his ears.
“Stop!” he yelled, casting glares at the prison wardens around him who laughed in mockery, their eyes shining with cruelty. Killer’s laugh raised in pitch, a painfully familiar foreign sound. “Damnit, Killer, I said stop!” Kid cried, reaching fruitlessly towards Killer’s back and cursing at the clinking of chains on his wrist.
As if overlaid on top of Killer’s mindless cackle, Kid could almost hear a quieter one, softer– that familiar laugh he knew; that only he knew.
Killer didn't trust anybody else with it.

When she reaches the far shore, her attendants trailing her with her luggage, Kaidou's son bows deeply. “Lady Komurasaki. Welcome to Onigashima.” His voice does not quite match his size- it’s sharper, and makes him sound younger than she would have expected, she thinks.
She smiles, bows her head in turn. The pins in her hair clink and glitter with the movement. “I was honored by the summons, my lord.”
