Summary
In which Annabeth proposes, in a way, and Percy goes down memory lane, only to realize their relationship is not what he wants (or needs) in his life, hasn't been for a long time... and he's never been what Annabeth wanted anyways.
After taking a split-second decision to get on a bus to New York from Berkeley, leaving Annabeth planted at the restaurant and all his belongings but for his phone behind, he runs into Apollo. Then, their bus explodes.
Cue an unexpected, soul-searching road trip, because a certain sun-god decided Percy needs therapy, and the sun chariot is, despite what others might think, not a free ride.

Ever since Percy found out that he was the son of Poseidon, Percy has been scared of hurting his loved ones. That fear has only gotten worse since his travels into Tartarus, and realizing that he was powerful enough to temporarily overpower and scare gods.
What happens when Percy lashes out in panic, and hurts Amphitrite? He's not naive enough to think that Poseidon will choose him over his immortal wife, who he has loved for eternity.

After the quest to save the world from Gaia is completed and the world successfully saved, Percy has everything that he's ever wanted... except love. He has his friends surrounding him, his father available to spend time with, and his mother living close enough for him to be able to travel from Camp Half Blood to her place on the weekends. But no love, Annabeth and he having discovered that their emotions didn’t run deep enough to call love, and deciding to end their relationship. In Heaven, Hermes plans on changing that. After the unfair ways he treated the demigod in the past, he looks for a way to make up for his mistakes, finding that his emotions for the young demigod run deeper than just wanting to be around the boy and acquire his forgiveness, but wanting the boy to be with him all of the time, at his side, and with a little help from Artemis and Aphrodite, plans on making Percy his.

Summary
After returning from Camp Jupiter and the quest to stop Gaea from awaking, Percy resumes school alongside Annabeth in Manhattan. For awhile everything is good. He's living under the same roof with his family: Annabeth, his mom and Paul. The scars he received from Tartarus begin to heal.
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Percy and Annabeth graduate high school, and move onto their post secondary studies. Annabeth is accepted into a Architectural Program at New Rome's University, while Percy is accepted into a Marine Construction Program in Georgia.
Percy has never realized how much he needs physical affection from his family. Its like a physical hunger. He misses hugging his mom in the morning. He misses Paul ruffling his hair, as he sips his morning coffee before heading to work. He misses holding Annabeth’s hand on the morning commute, and snuggling in the back of the bus on days that ran late.
Annabeth seems to be fine. She has Hazel, Frank, Reyna and Piper at Camp Jupiter. Sure she misses him, but from what Percy can see, she doesn't feel starved like he does. Sally and Paul are the same way; they have each other.
Only Percy is all alone, far away in Georgia.

Hermes only hummed before bringing them back to camp. "I'll find a new restaurant for us to dine at tomorrow, don't worry. I'll see you tomorrow, whether you like it or not!" He sing-songed as he was heading back to his cabin, likely to see his kids there.
"I don't even know why you did it the first time." He scoffed to no one, but he's sure Hermes heard him anyway.
Despite only an hour had passed, the almost accident at the arena was at the back of his mind, like it had happened ages ago. Hermes walked away, the sight of his back reminding Percy of how he's still in the same spot, him always in the same position while the others around him moved on.

Or, how lunch with Hermes snowballed into something bigger, including helping Percy heal from the cost of being a hero.

Update 10/21/2023 - the timeline on this work has been changed from four years post the giant/Gaea war to ten years, and it diverges from canon post House of Hades (since Blood of Olympus hadn’t been released yet). Chapters are in the process of being updated to reflect the changes, so you may come across a reference that hasn’t been updated yet. I’ll get everything pulled together eventually. 😉
