Summary
It was cold in the Place; cold and bright. The lights were harsh, so much so that if Newt looked near one, it almost burned. Not that he could see much anyway; his glasses were gone, his vision painfully blurry, like he was ten years old and glasses-less again. The bridge of his nose was uncomfortably chilled, absent of the familiar weight of his classic Geiszlerian nerd-chic specs. It was mildly awful; he had a headache, and even worse, he was stuck in some kind of chair, arms and legs firmly cuffed to it. He couldn’t move his wrists, and they hurt; at one point he must have rubbed them raw on accident. His left arm was stretched over a much higher elongated arm of the chair, and an IV was stuck into his elbow. Little raised cigarette-burn-like marks were dotted around the vein, as if the IV had been violently yanked out multiple times.

"It ends the second that Hermann suddenly grabs at Newt’s shoulder and says, 'Newton-' in a peculiar, choked voice. Newt looks up at him, startled, suddenly afraid, and across the Drift that he didn’t realize was still open, a flash of pain comes. Hermann croaks, 'I don’t feel right.'
Then his eyes roll back in his head and he collapses to the floor."
The Drift has serious effects on Hermann. Newt must race to find a way to save him while there is still time.

One, two, three. Straighten the yoghurt pot on the hospital table. One, two, three. Pick at the bandages on his left hand. One, two, three. Check his phone screen for messages from Mac.
No Mac still. No Mac, even though he should've been here five minutes ago, and his hand hurts like a bitch. One, two, three. Itch the hair on his face with his scraggy nails. Where is he? All sorts of things can happen in five minutes. There's ghouls out there after all; maybe one of them has stolen Mac. That would suck. Maybe he's been hit by a car on the way. That would suck too, but considerably more so than a kidnapping by ghoul. Car accidents are ugly and messy. Bones and blood and entrails, skin peeling in places it shouldn't, bodies inside out. Grazes. Yellow and green. Why are things yellow and green? It should all be red. Is Mac dead? Mac's fucking dead. One, two, three. Check the screen of his phone, but this time with shaking hands.

House scoffs and forces himself to reach for Hector's leash and hand it over, and just like that, Wilson's walking out of his office with Hector in tow, limping along on his right exactly where House usually is.
Halfway down the hall, Hector looks back at him, eyes huge and brown and reproachful.
"Wilson." He pushes the words out of his throat. "Wait."
