"Izzy."
He hears it like it's coming through the depths of the ocean. Blurred around the edges. Familiar but soft. His spine's too stiff to turn. His neck aches…everything aches.
"Izzy," they call again, closer. Gentler. "Come to bed, darling."
Bonnet.
He has the urge to say something. Snarl, maybe. Snap back with you're not my captain, Bonnet. But the words feel like gravel in his throat. Dry and grating.
There's another set of footsteps behind him. They are heavier, hard soled boots. Larger. Something he would know in his sleep.
A hand lands on his shoulder—solid, but not heavy.
"Go on, mate," Edward murmurs. "Do as you're told. He is your captain after all."

Izzy’s eye twitches.
“What,” he says, very carefully—because if he doesn’t say it carefully he will absolutely stab someone—“is that.”
Ed doesn’t look up. He’s sitting on the floor in the middle of the chaos, knees tucked up, glitter on his face, laughing with Frenchie and Olu. Tiny green and red ribbons are braided into his beard.
As if on cue, Stede pops up behind him dressed up in a crime against tailoring.
“Oh, Izzy!” Stede beams. “We were just about to come find you. It’s a Christmas tree! Isn't it wonderful!"

He forgets sometimes. Turns his head to comment, to share some passing thought, some absurdity only Sherlock would find half entertaining—and then he remembers.
The ledge. The phone call. The blood on the sidewalk.
The great and terrible absence of orbit.
Sherlock was the axis.

Jayce wasn’t supposed to land a new teaching job. And he definitely wasn’t supposed to in the middle of being pregnant.
But here he is—exhausted, perpetually nauseous, and trying not to lose his mind (or his stomach) on his first day.
He takes the bus. Finds a seat. Falls asleep on a stranger.
That stranger? Dr. Viktor.
Tenured department head. Alpha. The only thing that makes Jayce’s nausea ease.
Now he’s stuck navigating a new campus, suffocating social stigma, and—oh yeah—sharing an office with the alpha his hormones have decided is the one.
It’s fine. It’s totally fine.
Everything’s under control.
