Summary
Caitlyn, a lonely teenager who has been groomed to become the heir of House Kiramman since childhood, gets lost on a trip with Jayce in the Undercity and meets Vi, a child of the Trenches.
Vi helps her back to the Upper City, and although she makes it clear that she doesn't think much of the Pilties, as she calls Caitlyn and all surface-level people, young Caitlyn does everything she can to see her again.
Eventually, a tender bond of friendship forms between them, and Vi shows the naive Caitlyn that the Undercity is very different from what she was taught on the Surface from an early age.
But when a tragedy occurs that separates them, Caitlyn decides to join the Enforcers and change things for the better in the Undercity.
Will she and Vi ever see each other again?
Or: What if Caitlyn and Vi had met as teenagers?

The implication hung heavy in the warm air. Caitlyn winced —a quick flicker of professional distaste. The whole idea felt exhausting, like another high-pressure social interaction she was obligated to attend.
“I appreciate the offer,” Caitlyn stated flatly, setting her own untouched glass down with a decisive click. “But I am not interested in the ‘forget everything’ option. I am here under duress, and I wish to be clear: physical involvement is off the table.”
Caitlyn was so wrong with that one.
