They were in a cave, but the entrance was close enough for the moon and stars to cast their pale light inside. He stood slowly, using the wall Viktor sat against to balance without his leg brace. One shuffling step towards the entrance; another. The air was clear and cold, sapping all warmth from his body.
"We are a tad underdressed for the weather," Viktor said dryly, seeing him shiver.
Jayce laughed. "We're underdressed for everything except one of Count Azika's famous parties."

Viktor sighed and pulled the next resume to him. Then he stopped with a jolt. He knew the handwriting and the name. Emery Ashby. Viktor dated him for about six months after he had become Heimerdinger’s assistant. He thought he loved him. It did not end well. Viktor shoved the resume aside as if it were the most distasteful thing on the planet. He wanted to go home then. The memory suddenly felt too fresh.
A moment later, Jayce set a mug on Viktor’s work bench, which pulled him out of his thoughts, and dragged over his own chair to sit next to him. He’d been doing that lately, getting in Viktor’s space. He found, much to his surprise, that he did not mind.
“Did I get it right?” Jayce asked as Viktor took a sip.
“Eh, closer,” Viktor said with a small smile.
“I don’t know how you can stand it like that.”
“Life is brief. I refused to spend it drinking bitter things.”Viktor and Jayce stay up to late and talk about past relationships. Viktor loves Jayce. It is inconvenient.

The Pestilence reached Zaun on a warm, summer morning, brought by a near ghost-ship to the port. That was not a surprise. God saw fit to spare them for only so long. Singed knew the very moment it arrived. He’d been paying half the town’s urchins to watch the port and tell him of anything unusual. The road into the town was of little consequence, given the caldera-like shape of it. Most merchants went straight to Piltover anyway, where they were made to wait until a doctor checked them for signs of the disease. Slow but so far effective. Now, with the arrival of the Pestilence in her sister city, Singed gave it a month at the very most before it ravaged her elegant, white towers.
The Pestilence and Vi come to Zaun on the same day. Viktor goes home. A voice speaks to Jinx. The world starts to end. A Black Death AU.
