And just as Diane asked Sam if these were really his feelings, Frasier had a sudden vision of the future. He saw himself, sitting on this same stool, watching Sam wait month after month for Diane to return. When Diane would not return, Sam would drown his sorrows in willing women; he would nearly drown after the boat he purchased with the money he got by selling the house sank. And Diane would go off to some cabin in the woods and emerge with a novel ready to be published. Success and fame and wealth would be at her fingertips. And Frasier would still be at this damn bar.
“So,” Sam said to Diane, gentle and solemn while Frasier’s blood boiled. “Do you agree that we shouldn’t get married?”
Frasier leapt off his stool as abruptly if he’d been fired out of a cannon. “No!”

Summary
Tommy has always been able to see ghosts.
Usually, they stick around for a few days or weeks, maybe several months before they get what they need to move on. There was one ghost, however, who appeared when Tommy was young and seemed to be unable to get the closure he needed to let go and so he just… never left.
He got used to it, after a while, and Daniel became a consistent companion throughout his life.
