Thanatos doesn’t even need to look up to identify the customer. It is routine—they all recognize it.
The door chiming exactly at 2:30pm, right after the lunch rush finally begins to die down. The crisp clicks of expensive Italian shoes against the cool black coffee shop floor.
Thanatos frowns and fixes his eyes on the counter, rubs at it furiously as though it were to blame for his unsettled stomach.

Summary
Thanatos had been on his way to the lounge for a quick drink when he heard a desperate shade cry, My daughter! Have you seen my daughter? And there had been no survivors in that locale.
Back again on the surface, then, the world resolving itself in a green flash, as if someone had pulled the curtains for him and left him to stand alone at center stage.
Just as well that no one else is around. There was no way he could have come up with a timely excuse when his knees buckled and almost touched the ground until he caught himself by the length of his scythe. How embarrassing would it have been to show them that Death Himself was on the brink of death for doing a job that he has been doing since the concept of existence came to be.

Others do not touch him.
It is a simple fact of existence, as so many things are, and Thanatos doesn’t think much of it. Mother Nyx has never been one for physical affection, and once his domain properly took shape, he quickly stopped being close to his twin as well. Up on the surface, mortals run from his approach, do not wish him anywhere near their person; even the butterflies that form once Thanatos has taken their souls do not land on his skin, as if the mere contact could kill them a second time.
Others do not touch him. It is a simple fact of existence. He doesn’t think much of it.
Until someone does touch him.

Summary

This is the beginning of a growing bond between two who've both long admired each other, yet even Thanatos' love cannot cure Ares of his darkness. Still, in the arms of his new lover Ares finds a comfort he never expected, and what cannot be cured can still often be gentled by the hand of Gentle Death.
