Summary
After ignoring his phone in favor of getting split in two by his situationship, Shane is stranded in Boston at the start of the zombie apocalypse.
Ilya is left with nowhere to go, and Shane refuses to leave him behind. In order to survive, they have to cross the Canadian border and get to the cottage, together.
But getting to Canada is far easier said than done. When Ilya is badly injured, their road-trip becomes a race against the dead—and the infection spreading through Ilya’s leg.

In Pete’s swaying peripheral vision, boys drifted, not nearly as many boys as when they last saw light, but, Ray was there, pressed up against Pete’s side and that was all that truly mattered.
Shadowed by the looming figure of the major, stood, stately, atop a sputtering vehicle, in the pale glow of early morning, all of them trudged together, towards their graves, children ardent for some desperate glory.
But then, there was a moment of noise.
And in less than the amount of time it would take to buy a ticket, everything changes.
Or: On the second morning of the long walk all broadcasts are abruptly cut due to 'outside interference', there is still a long way to walk to reach potential safety (Garraty's mom's place) but with the competition dismantled an opportunity to look out for each other arises and friendship takes precedence.

Pete had spent a lot of time thinking about this after the Walk. It’s near impossible not to, really; you’re given the hardest choice you’ll ever make after the most horrific few days of your life, and you have forever to stew in the consequences of it. Pete has been stewing in it, indeed. “Do you really think you can wish for anything?” he asks. “It shouldn’t have been possible to get that kid an elephant so soon, but—”
“You want a magical wish, then? Like a fucking genie? It’s all hypothetical anyway. Go for it.”
Their feet move in tandem, like soldiers. The horrible ache in Pete’s stomach has gone away. This is the only time it ever goes away: here, in a dream, with Ray. “Well, I’d ask if I could just go on walking with you forever.”

Everything happened at the speed of light. One second, she was answering her Biology professors questions on synthetic genome therapy in front of a crowded lecture, and now she was standing in a hospital hallway. The bleach white walls and floors made her stomach flip, everything seemed far too bright and her knees wouldn't stop shaking.
The crash report stated that it was an "instantaneous impact” meaning their parents didn’t have much time to swerve out of the way. Some old truck that was far too old to keep up with the modern roads. Their mother and father were on their way back from a work trip. They were most likely eager to see their children again. Sometimes they’d get home after a two day trip and act like they haven’t seen their kids in years.
However, they had no time to prepare. No final words. No will. No goodbyes. Just, gone.
And now, somehow Sue's life had shifted. Her focus wasn’t school. It wasn't research. Instead, it was Johnny. Her ever so lively thirteen year old brother. A brilliant young boy who was now in her clutches..-.-.-.-.

A creature designed to cut him down at knee: this boy with his burnt-umber eyes and the freckles that cannot possibly be real, down here in the dark; with his sun-peach skin and the rabbit-down flicker of his eyelashes and the way he tilts himself towards Paddy like it is instinct, head down, mouth a long uneven trenchline.
Paddy knows only two things: he is in Death’s domain, and this beautiful, human-hearted ghost is a trick.
Paddy manages to get himself lost in Hell. A spirit with huge spun-silk eyes and strangely familiar hands is there to guide him back out.

Jayce nearly spilled his drink. "You…you think I’m pretty?"
Viktor rolled his eyes. "Everyone does."
Then he turned and walked away, beelining for a snack-laden waiter like he hadn’t just upended Jayce’s world.
Jayce was still trying to reorient himself when Mrs. Kiramman sidled up to him.
"Jayce." She smiled, polished and practiced. "I'd like you to meet an old business partner of mine. She is deeply interested in you and stands to gain quite a bit by investing in your work."
This was absolutely not what Viktor had meant.
But Jayce wouldn't let his…squeamishness…get in the way of his and Viktor's pursuit of progress. Their aspirations were worth a few bad nights on Jayce's part.
And Viktor never needed to know it wasn't just Jayce's sales pitch making their dreams come true. Jayce would keep the nightmares to himself.
