Summary
When Carmy’s piece of shit father finally dies, the news doesn’t come through family. It’s through a lawyer. An older man with a painter’s brush mustache, a Saint Laurent checkered cashmere suit, and a Chopard on his wrist. The inheritance is clear, his ill-gotten estate is to be split between his remaining biological children. The only issue is the two clauses to the hefty windfall heading their way.
One - If any sibling can’t meet the standards of the clause, the other siblings can not share their inheritance or they forfeit their own.
Two - They must be legally married for at least one year before receiving their share.
When Carmy can see the dreams he’d be able to make a reality with that cash fade away he’d blurted out that he was engaged without thinking. Engaged to Sydney. The only issue with Carmy’s grand plan was Sydney hadn’t spoke to him since he left The Bear. Almost two years ago.

The apprenticeship was emailed to her by one of her favorite professors right as decided it was time to wrap things up on Sheridan Road. She submitted the notice of dissolution for her LLC and her landlord had told her she had a month to find somewhere else to live when the email with the information about Chef Berzatto’s apprenticeship was sent to her. Working with Berzatto was one of her only options and a long shot, but her current state of affairs left her at a loss for what to do next. This apprenticeship sounded like her saving grace and last hope before she gave up on the culinary industry as a whole. A place that she never felt truly welcomed in or like she belonged.

There is just one problem, you don’t divorce one of the heads of the Italian mafia, unless you want to lose that head. So Sydney came up with a foolproof plan, run away. Except it not so foolproof when her dismissive and estranged husband decides he will burn down the world to get her back. Now they are stuck in a dark and seductive cat and mouse game. Things were going surprisingly well and it was only a matter of time before the other shoe was definitely going to drop. It always did with Carmy. It had to, because they continued to shovel dirt and debris over a secret that they unspokenly vowed to never let spill into their businesses. That was until one night he invited her over for a celebratory drink after receiving their first feature for both restaurants in Food and Wine. It wasn’t anything unusual for them to do. They were business partners who spent an uncomfortable amount of time together in and outside of work.
When she arrived he had her favorite bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon on the counter and a crystal wine glass. He didn’t drink, so his glass bottle of Coke was next to the bottle of wine as he poured her a glass. It started with one glass.
