Jon is in a dream of his own for once, and he knows immediately when he stares wide-eyed into his bathroom mirror and sees himself staring right back. It’s been a while since he’s been here, he realizes, and the space between the faucet and the valves is filled with cobwebs. Two of the three lightbulbs hung above his mirror have burned out, and the last remaining one flickers a sickly yellow light.

“I’m proud of you for taking care of yourself, and for knowing when it’s time to let go. I’m still learning how to do that.” He pulls away, and looks deep into her eyes, face flat and serious. “Don’t feel guilty for letting go.”
She lets out a long sigh. “Take your own advice, you stubborn geezer.”
He breathes a half laugh out through his nose. “It’s easier said than done.”
Marceline looks him over and notices just how small he is. When she was little, she’d thought he could do anything. She’d thought he was so big and infallible, strong and calm and forgiving and funny and everything she wanted to be when she grew up, sans his dependance on that stupid crown. Now, he just looks… sad. Flawed. She wishes she never had to see it, to see that the father she’d always needed was just a tiny part of some pathetic, small man who was a menace to bartenders and museum goers. She wishes that she didn’t see the similarities between him and Ice king. She wishes she didn’t still care about him after having to see him go crazy for a second time now, after watching him wake up screaming on her couch every day for a week.

He hugged her back, confused and disoriented from waking. “What’d I do?”
Marceline pulled away, incredulous. “You’ve been missing. For like… a week. We’ve been looking everywhere for you! Where have you been?”
White hot guilt shot through him like a bolt of fire. “Oh. Oh. Oh god, I’m so sorry Marcy. I didn’t… I didn’t even think…”
He didn’t even think about her. Not once. Not when he did the ritual, not when he was traveling the multiverse. Didn’t even think to leave a note, or send a text or anything. And here she was, eyes wide and desperate just like that little girl he had left a millennia ago. Worried. For him.
“It’s okay,” she said, but it wasn’t. Her forgiveness was the salt in his wound. “I’m just glad you’re okay. What happened?”

“And- and when you were back, for a while it was like nothing had changed. I didn’t have my Simon back, all I had was this… sad shell of a man who was crazy with grief, just like Ice King was, and I didn’t know what to do.”
Simon's heart broke for her all over again, for what had to be the millionth time. “I’m sorry I put you through that, Marcy. I don’t know if I ever told you, but I am. I feel like I’ve been… stuck, for a thousand years, making the same mistakes over and over and over again.”
She smiled a small, sad smile. “It’s ok,” she said. “I mean… It’s not, really, but I get it. Grief makes people do crazy things.”
