Summary
Agent Stone is a field agent, and a damn good one, until a mission gone sour leaves him with debilitating injuries. There's not much call for an agent who can't even hold a gun anymore, let alone use it. His career, and his life, are effectively over.
Until Commander Walters gives him a new assignment.
Doctor Robotnik is not a nice man. If he's not ignoring Stone, he's screaming at him. To him, all other humans are defective, and Stone's no different. Which, compared to the way all his doctors and higher-ups treat Stone now, is... oddly reassuring.

Summary
Stone had all the makings of a great Jaeger pilot except for the small issue of Drift compatibility.
Now he's just one of the many people in the Hong Kong Shatterdome, rapidly losing hope that anything can actually be done to stop the apocalypse. The few functional Jaegers they've brought together may help morale, but Stone can't bring himself to care. He knows he won't pilot them, and everything else he's capable of seems so futile.
Then a new Jaeger arrives, cobbled together out of scrap. If that isn't weird enough, its "pilot" is none other than the notorious Doctor Robotnik, the only man alive who successfully solo piloted a Jaeger - and who vanished, along with his Jaeger, years ago. The washed up old scientist squatting in his junkyard Jaeger is nothing like the legendary engineer and pilot, but Stone finds himself drawn to him regardless.
