Jabber could safely assume he had hit the concrete hard enough that the moment of impact had been lost to the universe entirely. There was no memory of it now. Only the aftermath. He lay on his back, staring up at a ragged square of sunlight several stories above his head. Four, maybe. A few more. It was difficult to tell when his vision kept slipping out of focus, the edges of the world smearing and reassembling themselves at random.

Enjin raked a hand through his hair hard enough to disturb the careful lines of it, boots striking the corridor floor in quick, directionless beats. He wasn't sure where he would go, maybe outside, maybe on a loooong walk out into No Mans Land and then just keep going.
“Why the fuck would it have been Follo?”

Enjin catches Zanka with his midnight visitor and realizes that this isn't something he parent his way out of. The heart wants what the heart wants and he knows that better than anyone. Technically a chapter 4 to Under His Hand that I preferred as a stand alone.

"Say that again." Jabber growled back, pure anger covering his features.

Zanka’s not a real cheery guy. He doesn’t let himself be. The only time Jabber has ever seen him close to happy—seen him smiling and laughing without a care in the world—is when Mankira’s gotten involved. When there’s a nasty wound bleeding something fierce somewhere on his body, turning his clothes sticky red as he shakes and screams, froth dribbling from the corners of his twitching, grinning mouth.
Nobody laughs when Jabber sticks them with his toxins. That is, they never laugh this hard.

Zanka giving everything he has, giving so much he wants to lay down and cry, and Jabber. Laughing. Laughing. Always too fast, always too tough, always too strong for Zanka to actually nail a meaningful blow on. No matter what tricks he and Assistaff pull out of the hat, it’s never enough.
It’s never enough.
Zanka can’t count the amount of scars Jabber’s given him. He doubts Jabber can say the same. Assistaff’s spikes move fast, and but not fast enough to seriously pin Jabber down. Like all that “knock me on my ass, Bad Attitude!” talk is just him bullshitting so that he can see the look on Zanka’s face when he refuses to just lay down and take it.
