Outside are four gravestones, lined up in a row. The newest one still has fresh stone. The dirt is still unsettled. Beside it lies an empty hole, tombstone not yet attached.
And yet, someday, it will be. But for now, the truth is kept inside a stuffy room.
Error peels up the blankets and settles in. When he looks up, Dust is beside him. His new boots shine, freshly polished. Error smiles at that, even though it's not funny. It's not funny at all.
Life goes on.

He was shown to a decking chair. “Please, sit my fine fellow.” Ink grinned flirtatiously and helped Dream to sit with a bow of his head. “And would you like a lighter with that?”
“I would be most pleased.” Dream replied with a similar grin.
“Right away then.” The smaller puffed up his chest, murmuring ‘lighter’ to himself as he walked back into Dream’s home.

What do you think? It’s a big change, I’ll admit, but I think it looks good on you!” Ink says proudly, their shining eyes seeming to liquify and change colour, another of the strange things Dream has noted.
She wants to cry, more than anything. She wants to sob until there’s nothing left inside of her. She wants her hair back, she wants to keep at least a part of her sister with her, but at the same time the very thought of that makes her feel sick to the stomach and choked up.
But what she forces herself to do, with a bright smile that feels very easy to fake, is turn back to Ink. “Where to next?"
Dream gets her hair cut and Nightmare has dinner with her gang.

Summary
Ink had a terrible memory.
It had long since become a fact of life, an easy joke to be made to get everyone laughing. It couldn’t be helped or changed, so why not get a little fun out of it where he could?
So Ink adapted himself to the klutzy silly guy persona. It wasn’t disingenuous by any means and it served him well. He was able to slide any weirdness he might have off his back because “Oh, that’s just our Ink!”
No one gave him worrying glances anymore. No one paid attention. It was best this way.
The problem with the jester persona is it didn’t account for moments like this.

Summary
The shame burned. Dream felt as though everyone knew. Knew that he was a failure, that he needed something additional to work (and he was already worse at his work than he'd like). Knew that he wasn't the beacon of happiness and hope that they believed in, that they needed, that they loved. That he was something flawed, which felt sorrow and exhaustion and shame.
