Farrier’s on his third year year in the RAF, has already seen enough combat that he sometimes hears gunfire in his sleep. Collins is fresh out of flight school, red-cheeked and bright-eyed and still untouched by the evils of the world. Farrier takes one look at him and thinks, his plane’ll go down in minutes.
But Collins surprises him.

He wonders if Collins heard about the dissolution of the stalags and thought, maybe.

The last few ruins of them crumble to the ground with the words. They are the Roman Empire: built brick by brick, carved across miles of land and decades of blood and battle, then destroyed in a fraction of that, any remaining evidence of their existence buried under the settling dust.
“Say goodbye, Simon,” Raphael says.
And he watches Rome burn.

Summary
Gabe’s cheeks are rosy from the cold, the tip of his nose red like Rudolph’s. Snow has set in his dark curls. Matt bites back a teasing remark about that, instead he brushes his thumb over Gabe’s uncharacteristically pink cheeks, reveling in how the flush deepens at his touch.
His breathing is laboured, like they just got off the ice after a particularly taxing game. Matt's close enough to see snowflakes have settled in his eyelashes, too.
I should kiss him, Matt thinks. He’s no stranger to that thought. In fact it’s been all he can think of lately. Ugh, he's so in love, it’s disgusting.
When they come to a stop at the end of the ride, he offers Gabe his hand to help him down from the carriage. It's more of a joke than anything, Matt is fully expecting Gabe to brush him off. But Gabe’s now-gloved hand slips into his, and Matt, encouraged to tempt fate, lets his other hand rest on the small of Gabe’s back to steady him.
Still no reaction. Gabe Perreault might have been replaced with an agreeable Hallmark-movie clone.
